History

The current facilities of Zaragoza Airport were built on the foundation of the old aerodrome of Sanjurio and Valenzuela, near the village of Guarrapinillos. The main purpose of both air terminals was to serve as military base. In 1947 services were extended at Sanjurio aerodrome, allowing the handling of civil traffic. In the consecutive year, international traffics were granted at the aerodrome of Valenzuela, with the establishment of a Customs Control point. Over the years, the two aerodromes developed in two different directions.

While Saranjurio aerodrome was given a very specific commercial function, an agreement between the Spanish and US government was reached to convert Valenzuela aerodrome into a military air station through extensive work. In 1965 Saranjurio aerodrome was renamed to Zaragoza Airport, after it officially received international traffic permits.

Today, the airport is an important hub for freights in the region. Several developments were necessary in order to expand as a distribution centre. A new passenger terminal, with a very distinctive designed, was opened in advance to the 2008 International Exhibition.
