An airport in the Docklands area of London was first proposed in 1981. In 1982 Captain Harry Gee landed a de Havilland Canada Dash 7 aircraft on nearby Heron Quays to demonstrate the feasibility of the project.

Prince Charles laid the foundation stone for the airport in 1986, and the first commercial flight took off from London City in 1987.
