Vancouver International Airport History

In the1930’s, following famous aviator Charles Lindbergh’s refusal to land at Vancouver as it “no fit field to land on,” construction began on Sea Island in Richmond. The airport expanded during World War II as the Royal Canadian Air Force were based there.

As passenger numbers increased, growth continued over the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s and in the 1980’s the number of international flights increased which resulted in a new 16-gate International Terminal being opened in 1996.
