The original Tokyo International Airport, otherwise known as Haneda Aiport, was located on Tokyo Bay. As passenger demand increased, expansion of the airport was needed and the current location would have proved too costly and difficult to expand on, so it was proposed that the airport be moved to a more rural location. The new airport, with three runways, opened in 1978.
