Bankstown Airport started as a Royal Australian Air Force site, called RAAF Station Bankstown, when the department of Civil Aviation obtained the land for development in 1940.

Bankstown Airport was used by the United States Air Force in 1942, acting as a strategic air base during the Second World War.

Home to the Australian Aviation Museum the large hangers at Bankstown Airport are also used in grand scale indoor filming, one of its hangars is used for Top Gear Australia.
