V.C. BIRD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT HISTORY

Built in 1942 (on the site of the Villa airport), V.C. Bird was originally operated by the US Air Force.

Handed back to the government upon the closure of the Coolidge Air Force Base in 1949, it became a civil airport two years later.

Known as Coolidge International Airport until 1985, it was renamed in honour of Sir Vere Cornwall Bird (1910–1999), the first prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda.

A new passenger terminal is currently being built and should be inaugurated before the end of 2013.

LOCATION

Located 5 miles northeast of St. John's, the airport is 10 minutes away for the capital.
