History

San José International was opened in 1949 after 10 years of construction and development. Southwest Airways were the first commercial airline to touchdown in Silicon Valley Airport, operating a Douglas Dakota DC-3 from San José to Los Angeles.

During the fifties and sixties the airport expanded rapidly with the creation of a six-story air traffic control tower, addition of second runway and larger terminal facilities.

In 1974 a third 1,400m runway was built on the western side of the airport, dedicated for general aviation flights, easing congestion. The City of San José implemented an Airport Noise Control Program in 1984 in order to establish a nighttime curfew for certain aircraft operations.

During the Silicon Valley dot.com boom in the year 2000, passenger numbers into San José International Airport soared, reaching a record 14.2 million.
