The airfield was originally used by the Brazilian Air Force, built in 1923. After World War II, international flights were moved from the existing Santos Dumont Airport to the Air Force Base and a new passenger terminal was built and opened in 1952.

In 1977, to meet growing passenger demand, a new terminal building was opened and Rio de Janeiro International was born.
