Palma de Mallorca Airport History

Originially, in the 1920s, Palma de Mallorca Airport was a flat field next to Son Sant Joan in Majorca. It was used for postal services to nearby Balearic Islands, however in 1938 the airport began being used for military aviation.

The runway was extended and renewed in 1958 which enabled the airport to increase the number and types of aircraft able to use the airport. The increase in use and passenger demand led to a new terminal being constructed. The new airport opened to domestic and international traffic in 1960.

As passenger numbers grew, a new terminal was constructed in 1965 and a second runway was built and opened in 1974.

Another new terminal completed construction in 1997, and is currently known as Terminal A.
