History
Palermo-Boccadilfalco is considered as one of the oldest airports of the Italian peninsula and operated formerly as the main airport of the Sicilian capital. The facility was under military operation just after its establishment in the 1920s. Members of the Allied forces handed back the air terminal to the Italian authorities late 1943. Commercial operations out Palermo-Boccadifalco were intact until 1960, before the opening of the new terminal in the northwestern part of the city, Punta Raisi.
Today, the former main airport of Palermo is home to the local Aeroclub Palermo and used for general aviation, while commercial aviation has been fully discontinued. The flying club manages the infrastructure at the airport, including a big hangar, classrooms and an administrative office. If travel plans are arranged for a visit to the Sicilian capital Palermo, it is highly advisable to land at the main airport Falcone-Borsellino due to restricted services provided by the Aeroclub (i.e. there is not flight control).
Location
Palermo-Boccadilfaco Airport is located three miles west of the city centre of the Sicilian capital. The surrounding area has very colourful vegetation, which supplies numerous fruit and fish market places in the centre of Palermo.
