Oxnard Airport was opened in 1934 by Ventura County, California and was originally just a dirt strip. The famous aviator Howard Hughes kept his famous H-1 Racer, the last non-military airport to break the world-speed record, at the airport. Ventura County paved the runway in 1938 and the Oxnard Flying School was founded at the airport soon after.

The U.S. Navy took control of the airport during World War II. Commercial airline service came to Oxnard Airport soon after the war and was maintained for many years. Today Oxnard Airport is solely used as a general aviation airport and is one of the premier private jet airports for the northern Los Angeles area.
