Orlando International Airport History

During World War II the airfield was used as an auxiliary airfield to Orlando Army Air Base. The airport was renamed in 1959 McCoy Air Force Base after the USAF commander, Colonel Michael Norman Wright McCoy.

The airfield eventually became a joint civil-military facility in the 1960s and by 1971 there were regularly scheduled airlines in operation at the airport.

The airport was renamed as Orlando International Airport in 1976 after expansions and improvements were made. In 1978, work began on a new terminal, and in the following years many improvements and additions were made to the airport.

The airport’s fourth runway as opened in 2003.
