History

In 1963 the airport was renamed after former US president John F. Kennedy, originally named Idlewild Airport, as the airport was built on the Idlewild golf course.

Construction of the airport began in 1943, and opened in 1948, with the then US President Harry Truman, attending the first commercial flight ceremony.

John F. Kennedy International Airport was one of the transatlantic destinations for the Concorde from 1969-2003.
