Malmö Airport History
Founded in 1923, Malmö Airport originally resided in Bulltofta, closer to the heart of the city, before relocating in 1972 to its current location Sturup. Authorities took the decision to relocate the airport due to the impact the expansion of custom was having on city residents.
During World War II the airport acted as a base for the F10 fighter wing which was tasked with intercepting German aircrafts violating Swedish airspace.
Opening its doors at the new location of Sturup on 1st December, 1972, Malmö Airport has seen over 58 billion customers through its gates. From the outset at its new location the airport was built with plans of expansion in mind.
In 2006 the terminal was renovated in order to increase its capacity for receiving customers. The airport is managed by Swedavia AB, a state-owned limited company.
