Long Beach Airport History
Long Beach has a rich aviation history starting in 1911 when the first transcontinental flight landed on the city’s sandy beach. That beach continued to be used as the city’s landing strip until Long Beach Airport opened in 1923. The airport was initially known as Long Beach Municipal Airport.
Both the Army and Navy used the airport as a training base starting in the late 1920’s. The Douglass Aircraft Company moved to Long Beach Airport in 1940 and began assembling aircraft on the field in 1941. Initially just producing aircraft to help with war efforts, the company continued to manufacture aircraft at the assembly plant until 2006. The Army and Navy abandoned Long Beach Airport in 1942 which coincided with the completion of nearby Naval Air Station Los Alamitos.
Long Beach Airport’s iconic terminal building and control tower were built in the early 1940’s and are still standing on the property today. Currently, Boeing builds the C-17 at Long Beach Airport while Gulfstream operates a large facility that finishes and paints their large business aircraft.
