Linden Airport History
Construction on Linden Airport began right after the 1942 attack on Pearl Harbor. General Motors used the airfield to test and commission their “Wildcat Fighter”, which was assembled in their retrofitted automobile plant across the street from the airport. After the war’s conclusion, the ownership of the Linden Airport was transferred to the town of Linden, New Jersey in 1947.
In 1954 the airport was converted into a road racing course and hosted a NASCAR Grand National Race. The airport remained relatively unchanged until 1998 when the airport’s ramp and hangar facilities were moved to the south side of the airport and 70 acres of antiquated hangars were converted into a commercial shopping center. Linden Airport hosted the 2010 New York City Red Bull Air Race.
