Lanzarote Airport History

To fulfil the island’s need for connections with the mainland and other Canary Islands, an airfield was constructed in the 1930s. A permanent aerodrome was built by The Spanish Air Force for defence purposes, which also began to accept civil traffic.

In 1970 the airport began running international and domestic flights after a new passenger terminal and control centre were constructed.

Terminal 1, the new passenger terminal was opened in 1999 to meet the growing number of passengers arriving and departing through the airport.

Lanzarote Aviation Museum was created from a passenger terminal to give locals and tourists the island’s aviation history.
