History of Kittila Airport
Kittila Airport was built in 1979, on the site of a forest airfield. The forest airfield had previously been used by a state enterprise which managed the woodland.
In 1982 the first terminal and air traffic control tower were built, primarily by the Finnish Defense Force. In 1990 the terminal was first expanded, to cater for growing flight and passenger traffic, which reached 265,000 in 2008. Further airport expansion projects at Kittila followed throughout the '90s and '00s, with the current terminal building inaugrated in 2008.
