Juist Airport - Private Flights
Overview summary
Located between the isle of Borkum to the West, and the isle of Norderney to the East, Juist is one of 7 inhabited East-Frisian Islands in Germany. With 17 kilometres length, but only 900 metres width maximum, the island is the longest of its kind and easily recognisable on a map.
The island has only 1772 registered islanders but during the summer the population quadruples. Tourists frequently call Juist 'The longest sand bar in the world' owing to its extremely wide beach, allowing for a wide variety of beach and outdoor activities, including horse-riding and kite-surfing.
Between the mainland and Juist is the 'Wadden Sea' which has a tidal range of more than 6 metres. This makes the island only accessible by ferries once, or sometimes twice a day.

Juist Airport History
In 1932 the islanders on Juist decided to build an airfield to make the island more independent of the strong tides that have always limited sea connections to the mainland. The area near the Kalfamer in the east end of the island was then selected due to its relatively flat geographic nature and the airfield was constructed by 70 voluntary workers who camped permanently on-site.
The airport opened on 15 April 1934 and proved essential during the next winter when the sea froze forcing ship connections to a halt.
Due to its short runway, Juist never housed any fighter aircraft during the war, but only 'Flak' anti-aircraft guns and defence equipment. The airport remained closed after the war until 1952.
In 1955, a summer flying and boarding school was opened at the airfield. The BN-2 Islander aircraft (offering seats for 8-9 and suitable for short runways) was so well suited to the demands of Juist that it soon became the most common aircraft commercially operated at the airfield.
Increased scheduled operations for tourists during the summer prompted the construction of a new concrete runway in 1973. The current airport building was opened in 1977 and houses a restaurant.
