The airport opened in 1977 to help increase tourism to resorts such as Al Quseir, Al Mahmya, El Gouna, Makadi Bay, Sharm El Naga and Soma Bay.

Numbers have risen so that it is now one of the top 10 African airports by passenger numbers. A second 4,000m runway is planned.
