History
Hamburg Airport was originally called Fuhlsbüttel Airport. Operations began in 1912 and during the First World War it was used for military purposes.
The airport became a base for the Luftwaffe during the Second World War until 1945 when the allied forces captured it. The Royal Air Force set up base there and renamed the airport Hamburg Airport from Fuhlsbüttel.
In 1946 the first scheduled flights since the war resumed. British European Airways initially operated these scheduled lights, but shortly after, other airlines followed suit. The airport received its first Jumbo Jet in 1970 and had to have a purpose built gate to accommodate it.
Since the war, the airport has undergone many improvements such as the expansion of runways, building of new terminals and updating of control towers and lighting.
