History
Construction of the airport began in the First World War and when completed was used for aircraft testing.
In 1926 it was extended to allow take off and landing. In 1935 whilst under management of the Royal Air Force, the runway was extended further and a pilot school was constructed around the airfield.
In 1943 during the Second World War, the entire airfield was bombed by the Allied Forces. Work was carried out soon after to restore the airfield but it wasn't fully used for several years after the war.
In the 1950's the airport underwent a lot of modernisation resulting in a resumption of military activities on the base and civilian flights commencing from the airport.
In the year 2000, the airport was once again modernised and expanded. Until this day Grosseto Airport remains an air force base while also serving private and charter traffic.
