Madeira Airport opened in 1964, but it soon became apparent that the short (and navigationally tricky) runway required expansion.In 2000, architects from the Brazilian company Andrade Gutierrez designed the new eyecatching extension. The pillared structure stretching out over the sea allowed for extra runway metres along with car parking under the runway.
