History
The world’s first airline “Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-Aktiengesellschaft (DELAG) was founded in 1909. The airline built Frankfurt’s first airport called Airship Base at Rebstock located in western Frankfurt.
It commenced operations in 1912 and it expanded after the First World War, however due to factors preventing expansion, the airport had to be relocated.
Construction on a new airport began in 1933 and finished in 1936. During the Second World War, the Luftwaffe took control of the airport making it one of their bases. In 1945 the US Army took control of the airport.
In 1951, the airport witnessed a growth in civil aviation traffic after restrictions on German air travellers were lifted. The growth in passenger numbers was explosive and by the early 1960s it became the second busiest airport in Europe.
