New Doha International Airport History

Due to Qatar's economic growth, the expansion of Qatar Airways and the current Doha International Airport’s increased passenger demand, construction on a new airport in Doha started in 2006.

The plan was to build a new, larger airport to the east of the current airport, on land reclaimed from the Gulf.

The airport's long runway was built to work for all aircraft types in Qatar's hot environment (in hot conditions aircraft need a longer runway for take-off).

The airport is due to open in 2013.
