History
Building began on the airport’s site in Ballygarven in 1959 and Cork Airport officially opened on 16th October 1961. In its first year it took just over 10,000 passengers, a figure that is now typically seen in an average day at Cork Airport. Facilities were improved in 1978 and during the 1980s, the main apron was extended.
Cork Airport can lay claim to being one of the youngest airport terminals in the nation following the completion of new terminal in 2006. Along with this construction, roads have also been upgraded and re-aligned from single to dual carriageway to improve access and travel to and from the airport.
In 2008, the Cork Airport authority secured interdependence from the Dublin Airport Authority. A new control tower was completed and officially opened on 20 October 2009, based 1km from the old airport terminal.
