Chicago Executive Airport History
Originally opened in 1923, Chicago Executive Airport was then known as Gauthier’s Flying Field until 1928 when its name change to Pal-Waukee. George Priester, the founder of Priester Aviation, bought the field in 1953 and modernized the airport by installing paved runways and lighting.
The airport was acquired by the cities of Wheeling and Prospect Heights in 1986 and the name changed again to Palwaukee Municipal Airport. Finally, in 2006, the airport’s name was changed one more time to Chicago Executive Airport.
Chicago Executive Airport Location
Chicago Executive Airport is located in the northern suburb of Wheeling and is approximately 18 miles from Chicago’s downtown “Loop”. Chicago Executive Airport is right off of interstate 294, which provides quick and efficient transportation to all parts of the greater Chicagoland area.
The trip from Chicago Executive Airport to downtown Chicago will ordinarily take around half an hour.
Chicago Executive Airport Facilities
There are three fixed based operators based at Chicago Executive Airport: Signature Flight Support has a large presence at the airport. They have a private jet passenger terminal that includes a large passenger waiting area as well a health and fitness center and outdoor patio and grill area. In addition to the passenger terminal facility, Signature Flight Support operates over 480,000 sq. feet of hangar facilities capable of handling up to a GV.
Atlantic Aviation operates a luxurious and recently renovated FBO facility that includes a passenger waiting lounge with wifi that works both inside and out on the tarmac.
In addition, there is a crew rest lounge and snooze room. Atlantic Aviation has a large hangar facility that can accommodate up to a Global Express.
Hawthorne Global Aviation Services is the newest fixed-base operator at Chicago Executive Airport, opening their facility in March of 2014.
Their private jet passenger terminal includes a waiting area outfitted with a fireplace and luxurious leather furnishings as well as a conference room suitable for up to ten people.
In addition, Hawthorn Global Aviation Services has a 30,000 sq. foot hangar that can accommodate most transient aircraft.
