BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT HISTORY
Birmingham Airport was first named Elmdon Airport, after the nearby village of Elmdon. The airport was opened on 8 July 1939 by the Duchess of Kent.
The airport was only open a short time before being used as an RAF base during World War II. At this point the grass strip was replaced by two hard runways. The airport was then returned to civilian use after the war, in 1946.
In 1967 the main runway at Birmingham Airport was extended to 7,400 feet to allow jet aircraft to operate from the airport, specifically for the VC-10 services to New York.
In 1984 the current airport structure was first used and was open on 30 May by Queen Elizabeth II.
In 1987 the airport ownership was transferred to Birmingham International Airport plc.
A second terminal was built and opened in 1991, which more than doubled Birmingham Airport's capacity.
BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT EXPANSION
A £40 million redevelopment took place in 2000, and the airport continues to undergo significant expansion work. Following the merger of the two terminals in 2011, the airport removed the word ‘international’ from its official name to become simply Birmingham Airport.
Planning permission has been granted, to increase the runway length from 2,605 m (8,547 ft) to 3,000 m (9,842 ft). This will allow aircraft such as the Airbus A380 to land there, and more direct long-range services to use the airport.
The building work for a new air traffic control tower at Birmingham Airport began in July 2011, and the control tower became operational in May 2013.The striking seven-storey construction stands at 111 ft and has won several awards
