Austin-Bergstrom International Airport was opened to general aviation passengers in 1999. Before this time, the airport was known as Bergstrom Air Force Base. Bergstrom Air Force Base was created in 1942 to help with efforts in World War II. The base was actively used for over fifty years until 1995, when the Air force ceased all aviation operations there.
The city of Austin had been searching for a location to build a new airport to replace the outdated and undersized Robert Mueller Municipal Airport.
The 1991 decision to close Bergstrom Air Force Base by the military allowed the city acquire the land and existing infrastructure already in place.
Costing 400 million dollars to build, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport opened to the public on May 23rd, 1999.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is located just across the Colorado River from central Austin. Sitting only 2 miles southeast from downtown, it is centrally located and provides quick and efficient access to all of Austin’s landmarks.
