History
The airport was first built in 1942 as a US Naval Air Station and was used to train naval air pilots for carrier operations in combat. In 1958, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) took over operations at the airport and established the William J Hughes Technical Centre. The airport site was expanded from 1,445 acres to its current size of 5,000 acres.
The airport used to be well served by scheduled airlines; however in recent times, many of these services have been discontinued due to falling passenger numbers. There are still a few scheduled services available, however the majority of civilian flights into the airport are now general aviation and charter flights.
