History
The airport was originally founded by Walter Paepcke and John Spachner in 1946. In 1956, the Aspen Airport Corporation handed over the airport to Pitkin Count, making it a public use airport.
A hard runway replaced the old gravel one in 1957, along with the construction of a connecting taxiway and apron. Throughout the late 1960s and 1970s the airport runway was extended and widened as the airport tried to focus on commercial air services. The apron area was also expanded to 400,000 sq ft which increased the capacity of the airport significantly.
The entire terminal area was redeveloped in 1986-7 and the runway was improved and lengthened to its present size of 8,006 ft in 2011 at a cost of $15.5 million.
