History
The airport was built in the 1950s by the British as a joint military and civilian airport. Originally known as Marka International Airport, it quickly became Jordan’s only international gateway.
In 1973, the airports single runway 06/24 was extended from 2000 metres to 3,286 metres, allowing it to accommodate aircraft up to B747 size. Urban development around the aircrafts perimeter during the past 20 years now means that future expansion of the airport is unlikely.
Queen Alia International Airport was therefore built in 1983 to deal with the increasing levels of scheduled air traffic in Jordan, leaving Amman Civil Airport to focus predominantly on domestic and charter flights.
The airport is also still used by the military. During the Iraq war in early 2002, the airport was used by the United States military as a base to carry out sorties into Iraq.
