Almaty International Airport History
Almaty Airport was originally built in 1935. From 1993 the airport was run as an independent business and was renamed from "Alma-Ata" Airport to Almaty International Airport JSC.
Following runway rebuilding in 1998 the airport was awarded the status of an International Airport.
The airport became famous as the first destination to be served by the TU-144, a supersonic airliner designed by the Soviet Union to challenge the Concorde.
In 2008, a second runway was built, which was given a certificate for CAT III landings, meaning that aircraft are now able to land at the airport in 0/0 visibility.
