History
The airport was built in 1940 by the Australian military and was used during WWII as a military air base by the United States and Royal Australian Air Force. Its primary role was as a refuelling and staging facility.
In 1958, the airport became civilian and was officially renamed Alice Springs Airport. At first it could only handle small aircraft due to a restriced runway length. This changed when in 1961 the runway length was extended to its present length of 2,438 metres.
In May 2011, it was announced that Alice Springs Airport would become the first large scale aircraft storage facility outside of the United States. Authorities chose Alice Springs due to its arid, dry climate which provides perfect conditions for aircraft preservation. This will make Alice Springs one of the largest outdoor aircraft museums in the world!
