Southampton International Airport History

Southampton International Airport began forming during the First World War, building hangars at the airfield’s location.In 1932, the airport changed ownership and was renamed Southampton Municipal Airport. The RAF soon began using the site and was also used by the Royal Navy in 1939, being used for ground and air training. The runway is built on top of the remains of a Roman villa.

In 1966 a new runway was opened to allow larger aircraft to land at the airport.
