RAF Northolt Airport History

RAF Northolt was opened in 1915. The base was a key London defence station in World War II, the first station to operate the Hurricane. During the Battle of Britain, the airbase was home to a series of Allied and British Hurricane and Spitfire Squadrons, including a complete Polish Wing. Look out for the spitfire which guards the entrance to the Jet Centre and ask to be shown the Polish History room inside, where Second World War memorabilia is on display.

After the war the airfield was used for Civil Aviation whilst Heathrow Airport was under construction and in 1952, Northolt was the busiest airfield in Europe, handling 50,000 air movements every year.

In the 1990s London RAF Northolt took on the major role of providing VIP air transport under No 32 (The Royal) Squadron, with the amalgamation of its existing squadrons and the Queen's flight from RAF Benson.

In 2006 London RAF Northolt opened its Jet Centre, to provide civilian business aviation services alongside its continuing military operations. The Jet Centre is operated as an extension of London City Airport's Jet Centre.

London RAF Northolt's high security means the airport is favoured by VIPs and governmental flights. It was also the forward base for Typhoon fast jets and Royal Navy helicopters, which provided air security for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

London RAF Northolt Airport is situated in Ruislip in Middlesex, England. The airport is 13 miles (a 30 minute drive) from Central London.

On arriving at the airport at the White House Gate, private jet passengers are cleared to proceed onto the base and to the Northolt Jet Centre.

Despite being adjacent to Heathrow, Northolt does not generally have arrival delays. Air Traffic Control vector aircraft straight onto the approach lane, with a route over Wembley Stadium when westerly landings are in operation.
