London Luton Airport History
Luton Airport opened in 1938 and was a base for the RAF during World War II, continuing commercial operations after the war. The airport was originally named Luton Municipal Airport.
The airport was always intended to be part of London's transport infrastructure, and was popular during the 1950s and 1960s as the package holiday became more popular.
During the 1980s and 1990s the airport underwent a major refurbishment and extension, which included a new international terminal, runway upgrades and a new control tower.
To highlight the airport’s close proximity to London and key role in the London Airport network, the airport was renamed London Luton Airport in 1990.
